My home theater system is complete; I've finally gotten the final piece: some floor standing speakers. I originally wanted to Polk Audio Monitor 70s for the front, but when killer deal came along on these Energys, I couldn't pass it up. I got them for 0 each when they normally sell for 0 each. I'm only running a 5.1 configuration with the Monitor 40s as the surrounds due to lack of space (meaning the Monitor 30s are sitting without use right now), but hopefully that can eventually be taken care of. Anyway, I'm only running it in stereo mode to showcase the new speakers. The song being played is the Bassnectar remix of Ellie Goulding's "Lights" from Bassnectar's new album titled "Divergent Spectrum."

A demonstration of a simple (but good) AM receiver for 160 metres. The set tunes roughly 1200 - 1900 kHz. Signals heard include AM broadcast stations and 160 metre AM activity on the morning net (including the VK100WIA special event station). It uses 3 ICs - NE602 mixer/local oscillator, MK484 455kHz AM detector and LM386 audio amplifier and comfortably powers a speaker on weak and strong signals. On its own the MK484 is a mediocre TRF AM receiver with poor selectivity. However it performs well as an IF amplifier and detector with some useful AGC action. The circuit is almost the same as 'Radio Projects for the Amateur' Volume 4 by Drew Diamond VK3XU (book available from WIA www.wia.org.au).

Near as we can tell, the audiophiles took over the design department at Marantz and now their new line of receivers looks very much like their reference line of 2-channel products. And, quite frankly, it's really awesome. This is a great receiver for a number of reasons. The first thing you notice about the SR5006 is that the huge LCD display that seems ever-present on all brands of AV receivers has been replaced by a minimalist round display. For under 0, the SR5006 offers power, inputs, and network streaming that go far above and beyond what we'd expect. On top of that it's rugged and looks totally audiophile - in a way that no one else does right now.
