HOW TO: Take the green wire from the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and connect it to any black wire also on the PSU. Next, connect the power (red) and the ignition wire (yellow) from the Head Unit to any 12V (yellow) wire from the PSU. Connect any black wire from the PSU to the black ground on the Head Unit.

In this video I discuss how to repair a vintage PIONEER SX-535 Stereo Receiver that had a loud crackling noise coming from the right channel. I plugged a pair of SONY MDR-W501 headphones in and the right ear piece started to get hot. The symptom causes the speaker coil to overheat. The owner of the nice stereo had a set of STEREO VOICE speakers and the right side woofer speaker cone was completely seized because of the loud crackling noise that was present after the unit warmed up a bit. A few days after the right was fixed the unit returned with the same problem in the left channel. I replaced the 2SA726 transistor (Q1 & Q2) and the problem went away. I found the source of the problem using my oscilloscope and the schematic. Check out my other video showing the owner's operation manual and schematic diagram.

In fixing the DC/speaker protection relay in the Technics SA-929 receiver, I sorta-kinda broke it by getting too crazy with the relay while popping the cover. It didn't require the amount of violence that most relays do (ten points for Matsushita!) but enough turned out to be too much for those solder joints. While in there, I also noticed a burnt out bulb and some curious wiring between the speaker connectors and power line. Now it looks and plays like new. The Sansui tuner (another find from the secondhand audio equipment sale) worked fine if you didn't mind the vacuum fluorescent display flickering on and off. I fiddled with this first and fixed that problem by reconnecting all the tinned wires I could find. (Each of the tinned wires plugs into a plastic connector, something that also showed up in the Pioneer tape deck.) After that, the display was solid but a light bulb responsible for illuminating some buttons kept acting up. As it turned out, there was cracked solder on one of the bulb legs. Someone was in there before me, as several of the VFD pins had also been retouched.

Please read this whole description. No less than four attempts at uploading later, here's the Technics SA-560 stereo receiver. It was also marketed as the SA-956 (different color, same thing). This model appeared in 1985, only about a year after stereo television broadcasting was formally introduced. There are a few things that make this unit unique. Although it is limited to the VHF band, the first is a built in audio only TV tuner that can play back monophonic, MTS stereo or secondary audio program (SAP) broadcasts. Analog TV is obsolete, but an RF modulator with stereo output can still allow you to use the TV tuner, as demonstrated in this video. Although there is a "CATV" band on the tuner, it is limited to tuning channels 2, 3 and 4. I'm not sure how it is really intended to be used. It seems that using it with an outboard cable box would restrict you to monophonic sound as most devices featuring an RF modulator do not put out stereo audio in the RF signal. (There are few exceptions to this.) Television audio appears to be run through a dbx noise reduction process as indicated on the front panel. A special vacuum fluorescent front panel display alternatively indicates power output or activation of the stereo "expander" function. It's really not necessarily but at least it looks "cool". Before everything goes digital, I'm going to show you how to make your OWN functional Speaker capable SW Radio in less than 5 minutes! Just watch, and I'll show you HOW to make your very OWN radio!. All you need is the following (you can get it on eBay for less than 2 dollars if you shop around): 1x 100 ohm Speaker, 200k Resistor, LM741 Op-Amp (or compatible), 220uF Electrolytic Capacitor, 10 nF capacitor, 15 pF Capacitor and a 47 pF capacitor, a Small cheap BreadBoard + some standard 1-core wire for Breadboard (find this at RadioShack or somewhere else). And a 9 volt battery. The components aren't critical, meaning you can easily use 270K or 180K instead of 200k resistor, or 100uF to 400uF electrolytic capacitor etc. Just find what you have, and connect it as I did...and it'll work for you!

If you are considering the purchase of a modern stereo receiver, here is one you really ought to look at. The Sherwood RX-4109 (or the recently discontinued Best Buy Insignia NS-R2000) stereo receiver is a heck of a deal for the money (less than 0 USD as of this writing). Although its power ratings are bit optimistic, this receiver still manages to put out some pretty good sound. It may be a little soft in the bass department, but the dimmable/blankable display, numerous inputs, decent remote control, dedicated phono input and strong power supply (complete with nice 'n heavy transformer) make this a receiver worthy of a long and hard look if you're in the market for a stereo receiver. I would say it compares very well to even much more expensive offerings. Both of mine came from eBay. One was new in the box.This one was said to be "broken". And an RDS decoder would have been nice, to make use of the fully alphanumeric display.
