Easystar FPV -- Dual RX Diversity Test
Easystar FPV -- Dual RX Diversity Test Tube. Duration : 7.97 Mins.
4-7-11 @ the "field off 19th", testing the recently secured EagleEyes ground station module. This amazing little gadget does many things but for now the focus is upgrading my ground station to dual 900mHz audio/video RX's. While the EagleEyes antenna pant/tilt was also acquired it is currently static, not yet tracking the plane in the sky. At altitude the signals seem much cleaner, switching between receivers is seamless. The superimposed cockpits are a result of being board :-) Plane Detail: Multiplex Easystar plane powered by a HiMax 2000kv BL motor and a Castle 36amp speed controller. Flight system powered by 11.1v 2200mAh Li-Po 20C, Video systems runs on 610mAh Li-Po 30C. Plane has rudder mod and Airscape landing gear. The FPV pod and pan/tilt system on the plane were home made of a durable black plastic and house a RMRC-540 OSD camera from ReadyMade RC. Audio/Video signal sent via 900mHz 500mw TX. Ground Station: EagleEyes ground station module, ReadyMadeRC EagleEyes antenna pan/tilt system, 2x 900mHz RX utilizing 1x 8dB patch antenna and 1x 3dB rubber ducky antenna atop a tripod. Flights are viewed/captured on a laptop using EasyCap 2.0 usb audio/video interface. Bench Mark Legend: Altitude: 350 feet Distance: 0.50 miles Flight Time: 25 minutes (plane could have kept going!) These will be fun benchmarks to push as my gear and skill improves.

How to fix the HDMI switching issue that plagues the TX-SR606, HT-R960, and HT-R667 receivers. To fix it you will need 5 x 100uf at least 4v, which I got from mcmelectronics(.com), part number 31-8160. Others have purchased 100uf 35v electrolytic capacitors from Radio Shack (P/N 272-1028) for .29, with good results. Just be sure to put the negative side of the capacitor (it is marked) on the square side of the stamp on the circuit board where the old capacitor was removed. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE: If you try the repair, please comment on what was happening before and after replacing the caps. For example (mine): Before: The receiver would take 5-10 min to hook up with the TV. Neither the video nor sound would work until the connection to the TV was made. The On Screen Display (OSD) didn't work, and component video in would not work going out HDMI to the TV. The problems all started at different times, and got worse over time. After: HDMI handshake now works properly and connects after a second or two (so everything connects quickly). Component video and OSD work fine.

Video Streaming over LAN is an interesting concept and has a lot of practical implications. I used it to stream a movies to various rooms at home and at office (NCSU - University of Peradeniya) am needing to use if to broadcast a student registration. Alternatives: VLC Player [ encountered issues with newer versions of VLC ] Where to get: www.microsoft.com HowTo [Basic]: @Senders End [ IP Address is : ABCD - use ipconfig to obtain ] 1. Open Expression - Select Live Broadcasting Project 2. Select Live Source or Add File Source 3. Cue the source by clicking the 'Cue' button 4. Go to Output - Select Streaming and then Broadcast 5. Go to Encoding - Do necessary changes to Audio / Video 6. Press 'Start' button @Receivers End 1. Open Windows Media Player [ or what ever player ] 2. Open URL and enter mms://[IP Address of Broadcaster]:[port no] ex: mms://ABCD:8080 / mms://192.168.0.21:8080 Considerations: Video Encoding is a process intensive task. This receiver had a nasty fall and no power after that. The price was very right, so I decided to look into it and see what was going on. Sony could have used more support and bracing in the construction of this receiver, but to be fair, no stereo receiver designer expects their product to fall off of a shelf. I do tend to prefer the Sherwood receiver compared to this one. The Sony seems a little more powerful, but I'd give the Sherwood better marks for construction quality. And even though it took a lot of asking, Sherwood sent me a service manual for free. Sony customer service was rude about it the first time and theirs will cost .

I simply cannot express how amazing it is to be completely immersed in this album. For me, It's like hearing it for the first time, times ten. Mastering engineer, Alan Parsons took full advantage of the Quad format, by ping-ponging sound effects, and the crazed laughter around you. On 'Us and Them', the echos circle around you, rotating the sound field each verse. If you have the proper equipment, and the source material, I urge you to experience it for yourself. I recommend experiencing this with four full range speakers and a Quad receiver, but any DTS capable home theater receiver will also do the job. Even with bookshelf/satellite speakers and a subwoofer. This unreleased (at the time) Alan Parsons Quad mix has been available since 2006, via a pirated copy supposedly made from the master tapes. As of September 27 2011, you can legally acquire this Quad mix in DTS form via; "The Dark Side Of The Moon - Immersion Box Set" on disc 3 www.amazon.com . I'm not sure if it's 4.1 (for people who do not have full range speakers, and rely on a sub for handling bass). This was an "antique store" find to which I could not say "no". It looks great and works well, although the top cover was slightly sprung when I got it and the building it was in smelled very moldy--a smell that followed it home. I was able to air it out quickly and it has been fine since. The rubber parts are good. I also got the service and owner's manuals with it...the service manual discusses only this machine while the owner's manual discusses several, including fancier models with auto-reverse. As you can also see, I set up a little stereo rack for the Technics SA-929 receiver as well.

I've wanted to know what goes wrong with these units, so I picked up a broken RX-5502 multi-zone receiver. Its circuitry differs somewhat from the RX-4105 or 4109 series, but the same basic design is used for power and preamplifier circuits. Sherwood claims a total output power (with all speakers going) rating of some 400 watts. They are dreaming! As found, this receiver would just shut down a few seconds after being powered up, followed by a blinking standby LED. Normally this indicates a power amplifier or power transistor fault, yet I did not think such a fault existed here. Watch and see how I did some troubleshooting and arrived at the cause of the problem. I'm not sure it's totally fixed yet, as the new regulator seems to be running awfully hot. I'll have to look into that some more, but it did survive running for several hours tonight. Now all I have to do is find some screws to replace the ones I didn't get with the unit and straighten out the cover a little bit. There are some interesting features that were never realized in this unit. When sold as a TEAC AG-980, this unit gains an optional serial port and some other connections. I've been having issues with my receiver that came with my Onkyo HTS-6100 HTIB unit. The receiver is the Onkyo HTR667, similar to the TX-SR606. When switching inputs through HDMI, I get the error, "No input selected". First, it started with only the input where my xbox 360 was connected to. I assumed it was just the Xbox that was having the issue. Then, it started to happen to all of my inputs. Only the CBL\SAT input worked, which had my Motorola DVR. I took my receiver to get serviced on 10/13/09 and picked it up 10/19/09. I was informed that the HDMI card was replaced. According to the the invoice, these are the part numbers for the new HDMI card: "Part # 22242394R3 SII9134CTU Q8401" When I first connected my AVR yesterday, the inputs did not work for the first 30 seconds. I feared that the problem was still present. I power cycled the unit and then it started to work no problem. Today, 10/20/09, I powered on the unit with the input CBL\SAT selected and was able to watch a SD channel. I changed it to HBOHD, again the error, "No input selected". UGH!!! I turned on my PS3(input VCR\DVR), Xbox 360(AUX), and ONKYO DVD player(DVD) and none of them worked! Swapped back to CBL\SAT, and got sound from my Cablebox, but no picture. I am extremely disappointed in this AVR because I read great things about Onkyo. Mind you, every one at AVSForums agreed that their AVR's ran hot, but that was it.
